Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 831064 Serac S3 LED FlashlightCustomer Review: Gotta looove Leatherman 831064 Serac S3 LED Fashlight Summary: 5 Stars
I'm clearly IMPRESSED! I have been imprinted upon flashlights, watches, fountain pens since I was a child. And I have been availing myself to them when I can afford the cost as to its perceived value and practicality.
For the price, I do not know of any other similar type of LED flashlight that is compact and can deliver 100 lumens maximum onto the desired item to be viewed! I have seen "Surefire" flashlights on the internet costing twice to thrice as much as what this discontinued Leatherman model can deliver. It is a gem!!
Yes, the batteries can be expensive, but if you search the internet, or even call a retail battery business, they may give you a quote on C123 lithium batteries for about half of what it costs you to buy a single one at a non-battery dedicate store. If you buy in bulk like say a dozen more or less, you might even get a nice price that averages out to less than half of what you would pay retail for a single one. Just remember to personally find out the shelf life of such batteries, which purportedly lasts a decade upon manufacture.
The lanyard seems flimsy, but if you take it to a business, that specializes in items like beads or crafts, you could buy a stronger filament that will replace the apparent flimsy thread, that is attached to the thicker main lanyard. It won't kill you to improvise!
Prolong activation of the unit at its maximum lumen output will cause the unit to heat up, but not too uncomfortable and unless you're worried about a hostile detecting you using thermal imaging and/or targeting you with a heat seek missile then the heat is tolerable and a very minor point of interest. All in all organisms in the wild using their natural/innate sensory thermal imaging sensory faculty will pick up your heat signature unless you take effective anti-thermal countermeasure(s). You'd best not be using it when being hunted by a "Predator"...don't tell that there's no Santa Claus neither!
I really like the 3 levels of lumen output, that can be attained by "feathering" with the touch of one's digit upon the rubberized light activation switch to cycle through the 3 levels of lumen output to conserve the battery and to deploy the practical amount of light needed to visibly view the object, etc.
I have yet to test its water resistance, impact resistance, and upcoming tolerance to the cold of the Canadian weather. I am fond of its compact length and width, and will substitute it for my usual 150 lumen "Dorcy"(?) torch that is about 1.75x the size of this discontinued Leatherman gem when I patronize nightclubs, bars, lounges, and the like. It's very handy in such venues and unlike this "Dorcy" which only has one setting of maximum lumen output, this discontinued Leatherman has 3 levels of lumen output for nearly any sort of use one may find in such publicly licenced venues. Bonus! Purported organized gangsters tend to freak out when they see someone using a compact flashlight! I am so enamoured with this gem and truly regret, that Leatherman for whatever reason or reasons has chosen to discontinued such a fine light tool - PITY!
I'm seriously considering purchasing additional discontinued Leatherman 831064 Serac S3 Flashlights as gifts and even another one as backup. I do not know of any other manufacturer, that has nearly overwhelmed my fondness for flashlights as Leatherman has with this discontinued gem, that fits quite comfortably in my small size hands. Can't use it as an effective blunt weapon, but its 3 varying level of lumen output is more practical anyway. Sweeeet!!
Oh, I purchased it from Amazon.com, albeit in American funds, it was still more economical than the CDN$105 charged at a local retail unique gift store!
