Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 830555 Hybrid Gardening Multitool with Nylon Sheath

Customer Review: Great little, yellow, power house.
Summary: 4 Stars

When I first received my Leatherman I was not sure how well it would perform. It is smaller than any other tree lopper that I have used before. I would classify it as a small hand lopper. It is small enough to comfortably place in a tool belt or attach to your belt using the included belt carrier. It seems to work on branches up to 1/2" as long as you know how to use them correctly. If you don't know what you are doing any tree lopper will bind and not give a clean cut. The hardest wood it was used on is an Ash tree that needed some pruning of low branches. The 1/2" inch diameter branches where the most I could easily cut on the ash. Very sharp and very clean cutting. It works great for the more fine to medium trimming of tree branches, shrubs and rose bushes. It also works great for trimming in places where the larger 24" or 36 " tree loppers are a little ackward and tough to menuver between branches. My opinion is a great addition for the finer trimming and for the average home gardener. But if you work with trees, hardwoods especially like oak, walnut, etc., and need to lop off 1/2" or larger branches you will either need a saw or the Leatherman's big brother, lopper (24" or 36"). Now you say there is a saw included...well have you ever tried to cut a branch with a 3" saw that has two movable handles?

Customer Review: Solid tool, well designed

I bought one of these for my fiancee, who is the gardener type. I bought it so she would stop absconding with my pocket knife, and so far my plan has worked nicely. I'm no conoisseur of bypass pruners, but these seem well-constructed and plenty sharp. The tools are typical Leatherman steel, which is to say adequate unto the task.

I strongly prefer locking knives, and this one doesn't. That's a bummer, particularly with the saw. I've also become very accustomed to having access to the knife blades on the outside of the tool (the way the Wave and Charge are designed) but I think that would have made this tool too bulky and unwieldy. As it is, it's a big tool...noticeably larger than my Charge. The handles are comfortable enough, with nice injection-molded rubber inserts.

The sheath is great. There's a metal pocket clip, and a nylon belt slot. The tool can be stored either folded, or in pruner-mode, which is a very nice touch.

Well made, well designed, well-conceived. Despite my quibbles, the lady is a happy gardener, and my pocket knife is way less muddy. Mission accomplished.

Customer Review: Great tool to have in the garden!

The Leatherman Hybrid Gardening Multitool is one amazing tool! The shears are sharp and lock into place to allow the tool to be folded up. The multitools all work very well. The only two complaints with this tool are 1) The weeder does not lock into place, which means it will fold under while trying to use it. Not good for stubborn large weeds (No snide comments about why I allow my weeds to get so large! Everyone gets them... at least I tell myself that.) 2) You cannot open the side tools with gloves on. Maybe with latex gloves, but anything with any thickness and you'll have to take the glove off to be able to open the side tools.

Overall, I really think this is a great product. Those complaints are minor and I highly recommend this product!

Customer Review: Perfect fit.

I take care of 4 lawns as a hobby. I have a much heftier set of Corona pruners I use when there is a lot of pruning to be done but the leather sheath that holds them is heavy and bulky and if I move wrong the clippers will literally fall out. This sheath is smaller and holds the tool snug but I can still access them easily even with gloves on. If I happen upon a stray weed - the weed tool does the job. A small branch - the pruners. A thicker branch - the small saw. This thing does EXACTLY what I wanted it to do, and I found it here at a MUCH lower price than at least 4 other vendors.

Wife wanted this, and I also thought it might be quite handy. Hadn';t seem anything like it, so went with the "excellent" name of Leatherman and found that its quite the tool. Good tohave around BUT, I don't think it hold to the standards of the regular line of multitools. Still, quite good & useful. Just a little more effort on their part & we could rate it Excellent!.
