Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination Sheath

Customer Review: If it feels good . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

The Leatherman Wave with Sheath 830039 pocket tool is definitely a tool to have if you are person that has need for some basic and sometimes particular tools when you are at work or anywhere else away from your handymans tool box. The weight of this pocket tool feel good and reflects the quality that I have experienced with it. The weight of it definitely makes the sheath an item to have so that you don't limp on one leg from having it stuffed in a pocket. Maybe it should not be labled as a "pocket" tool but rather a hip or belt tool. The quality of the engineering that has been put into the design and functionality of this item is quite impressive. I have used the pliers, both the needle nose and the standard plier a couple of times now and I am very pleased with the amount of force and torque that can be applied with it. It handles hard torque well and does not(so far), seem to have flaws in the design that will allow it to start coming loose at the hinges like so many similar products. The cutting blades and the wire cutters are very good along with the fit and function of the flat and phillips drivers. The choice of tools that are available are ones that I feel are about the best choices that one could want to have. I love this tool and recommend it strongly. Based on previous experience and use of the Swiss Army Knife, I feel it beats the Swiss Army Knife hands down.

Customer Review: Superlative
Summary: 5 Stars

I got a Wave for my birthday last week and I have been carrying it with me since. I was curious as to how often I would be able to use it and it turns out I've used it on about a dozen occassions. Most of them were opening packages which, in previous times, would necessitate a trip to the kitchen to get a steak knife. But I saved a trip to the basement when my stapler jammed and I used the pliers tool and I saved a trip back into the house when the headlight wiper on our car fell off and I had to cut the de-icer hose off in order to remove the thing from the car. That's all in less than a week. If you are far away from your home, this tool would prove even more useful -- I could well imagine that it could possibly make a big difference -- perhaps the difference between life and death. Remember the scout motto: 'Be Prepared'. The Wave prepares you for a lot of eventualities.

As to the quality of the tool, I think most people will be surprised by the high quality even after having read all the glowing reviews. There is no need for me to repeat what others have said in this regard except to mention that I do not share the opinion, expressed by many, that the leather sheath is tacky. For this purpose, I believe that the leather SHOULD be heavy and stiff.

I would highly recommend the Wave to anyone.

Customer Review: Best Multi Tool I Own IMO Superior to GERBER
Summary: 5 Stars

This Leatherman has just about everything I need. The best feature is the 4 tools that open when the pliers are closed. It is a bit heavier than the others I own, but not too heavy. I own and use several other multi tools: Leatherman Crunch and Freestyle, as well as Gerber Original Multi Tool, Crucial, Suspension and Mini Suspension, and a Craftsman multi tool that has a needle-nose vise grip pliers on it(Kershaw A100c). The WAVE fills all the gaps that these tools leave open, as I have never really found a good use for the vise grips, and the Gerber tools are not as sturdy and most are now made in CHINA. Also, one handed opening is not a big deal to me. I bought the pocket clip and lanyard ring, and plan on buying the bit sets and extension as well. This is just a well made and well thought out tool. If it holds up to the medium duty use i put most of my knives and tools to, I will probably have this for the rest of my life. My only gripe is the phillips head is still a "cross driver" albeit the best one I have seen yet. It is my understanding that this can be remedied by buying an adapter, so maybe I will buy that

I ordered the Leather/Nylon combo sheath but Amazon sent me the all leather one. I liked it so much that I did not bother to send it back.

Customer Review: A very good tool
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second Leatherman tool I have owned. I have a PST II that is still in great condition, but I decided it was time to upgrade.

The Good:
1. Locking blades. This is my biggest criticism of the PST II. The blades and screwdriver bits don't lock, so if you are really bearing down on something, it can close on you.
2. Rounded grip surfaces. This makes the pliers very easy to grip and squeeze.
3. A good variety of tools.

The Bad:
1. The scissors don't appear to be as solid as the older scissors. They cut fine, but they are thinner and seem almost dainty.
2. The non-blade tools are difficult for me to open. I don't have very good fingernails, and the nail-nicks are very hard to get to. I usually have to get out a coin to open them, and conbined with the stiffness of the hinges (an otherwise good thing), they are hard to access.

All in all, I really like this tool. It is heavy, but I don't consider that a bad thing. the hinges and locks are all very typical Leatherman--they are all tight and firm. My PST II is a few years old, and all the hinges are tight on it as well. I would not hesitate to recommend this tool to anyone.

Customer Review: New Wave: This Tool Rocks
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was a kid I always had a Wenger Swiss knife so this always made me look towards a knife that could do everything. My first Leatherman was the PS1 which I owned for less than 48 hours before I laid it down on the job for less than two minutes and it walked. That was 9 years ago. Did not know the value of what I lost. In those 9 years the Leatherman tool has improved greatly. The New Wave does everything that I always needed when I did not have tools with me. It is a great product. Since most of these reviews are good I will highlight what I would like improved. When I first recieved the tool it seemed as if they forgot to install the lanyard ring. Emailed Leatherman customer service and they told me the lanyard is recessed at the foot of saw looked closer and there it was. That is a very nice feature. My pliers will not shut properly by just closing the handle. They get caught on the inner tools unless I partially close the plier heads. Not a major problem. The can opener/bottle opener is not as fast as a p38 can opener but easily removes the caps off Widmer heffenwiesen. These are the only problems that I can find on this tool. Awesome tool.
