Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination SheathCustomer Review: New Wave an improvement over previous model Summary: 5 Stars
As an owner of (i) the older-model Wave, the Victorinox Swisstool, the Gerber Multi-plier, and an assortment of Victorinox and Wenger hybrid multi-tools (pliers embedded in a knife chassis) as well as a plethora of standard Victorinox and Wenger swiss-army knives, I can safely say that my new Leatherman Wave is a qualitative improvement over all of them. This endorsement barely includes the SwissTool, which was my previous favorite, but is rather bulky and especially heavy at 11 oz.
The revised plier head is substantially stronger, and whatever improvements were made to the handle structure to improve stiffness have obviously worked. While the older Wave would spring the handles considerably when cutting heavy wire stock, the new Wave will cut even heavy nails with nary a handle flexure.
Also, while I have on occasion caused the inner, non-locking tools on the previous-model Wave to collapse inwards under pressure, all tools lock on the new Wave.
They have also added a safety feature that prevents the outer blades from opening once the pliers are opened to any considerable extent.
BTW, another reviewer (a Mr. Tingley, I believe) has opined that he prefers the old nmodel Wave and would like to purchase one. You can buy mine - it is in like-new condition. Since you hail from Philadelphia, and I work in Mt. Laurel (literally across the river), I'm sure that we can arrive at satisfactory arrangements to transfer it. Customer Review: Replacement for Original Summary: 5 Stars
I donated my years old 'original' Leatherman to the Transportation Authorities at the Auckland, New Zealand airport this past June while attempting to fly home after a month of tramping and exploring New Zealand.
I never hike with out it and New Zealand was no exception, except I transferred some small bags from my checked luggage, 25 lbs limit, to my carry-on backpack forgetting my Leatherman was in the small bag.
"Sir, is this your bag", the nice fellow asked me. "Sure is", I agreed cheerfully, not having any idea why he was asking. "Do you have a Leatherman or similar type of tool in your bag?" Long pause here. "Oh s^" said I, light coming on bright in my head, "I forgot it was in that bag I moved. Got me."
We had a nice conversation about the knife and how it occurs daily with visitors hiking New Zealand. "Can I at least keep the leather case I took so many years to break in?" I asked. "Sure leather doesn't melt very well anyway", he said handing me the case.
Turns out the original case didn't do me any good when I received my new 830039 anyway because its just a smidgen bigger then the original, but ooh so much better in design, use and tools.
So do your self a favor, purchase the Leatherman 830039 along with the included case. But don't forget to place it in your checked luggage ever time you fly, or you'll be just like me donating it to a smelter at your local airport.

Customer Review: A very good Amazon deal Summary: 5 Stars
The Leatherman New Wave tool is one of the better deals on Amazon. By itself, and at the list price, the Leatherman Wave is an expensive indulgence--a tool with most of its functions covered quite nicely by a good-sized Swiss Army knife like the Swiss champ. Amazon's pricing makes the Wave Tool affordable enough so that you can have both, as I do, choosing the right tool or tool element for each situation.
I myself do a lot of work with cordage and I find the Wave Tool's one-handed opening blades wonderful for measuring and cutting, allowing me to hold the measured point in the line with one hand while I get out the tool with the other. The pliers are actual pliers with well-functioning wire-cutters, the blades are real blades (so how *am* I going to sharpen the serrated blade?!), and it does what it's supposed to do well. You can't ask for more than that in a tool and, on Amazon, the price is definitely right--right enough to be worth my while.
One note to the consumer though, some of Amazon's suppliers offer the bare tool while others will bundle it with other things like the nylon sheath, or a few additional tool bits for the tool's carrier for not that much additional money. Fair's fair, I bought the tool I bought and I'm very satisfied with it, but if I were shopping for it right now, I'd look a little harder and find a supplier on Amazon who offered you just a little bit more.
Hope you find this useful
Customer Review: Leatherman New Wave vs Original Wave Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the New Wave to replace my original design Wave multitool that I used for years and lost. I have been using it daily for several weeks now, just like I did my old one. This is actually my 4th leatherman multitool I have owned since the late 80's. Each has been a trusted companion, and each new version has been an improvement over the old.
I prefer the beefier knives and better locking mechanism, as well as the accessory pocket clip of the new Wave design, but I do miss the variously sized regular screwdrivers of the old Wave. I used those frequently, although the trade-off is understandable.
I was concerned the new phillips screwdriver would not work well, but it performs fine. I was also worried that the very small screwdrivers would be useless, but they have proven capable - and now I do not have to carry a separate set of precision screwdrivers with me.
The new scissors are somewhat smaller, but they work very well, maybe even better than before. They seem much sharper than the old scissors.
I am very happy the the tool adapter of the old model still works perfectly with the new model. I also like the stronger feel of the new design, although the old felt very good in this regard.
Overall I prefer the new design. I give it a solid 5+ star ranking, just like the old design. But I do miss the several sizes of screwdrivers hard-mounted in the old.
Customer Review: A Serious, Intelligently-Engineered Tool Summary: 5 Stars
I have had two other Leathermans (Leathermen?) prior to this one, and I think this tool exhibits a level of design and engineering that surpasses them. I had an original Leatherman PST and a Juice S2. The original was competently done but was not as refined as the New Wave. The Juice S2 was an almost perfect compromise between size and features, but it always annoyed me that the two halves were asymetrical. I gave the PST to my father-in-law, and the T.S.A. took my Juice, which prompted me to get the New Wave.
I haven't had to do any big jobs with the Wave, but I use it at least once a day for something. What I like best about it is the sophistication of the design and the quality of the construction, and the little touches that make it so satisfying to use.
For example, I love the one-handed opening knife blades. (The only shortcoming I can see is that they are designed for right-handers only.) The way they integrated them into a tool like this is genius. When I first got it I liked them a lot, but was a bit frustrated because I never knew which blade I was opening, the serrated or the drop-point. Then one day I noticed that the back of the serrated blade was notched, and the back of the drop-point blade was smooth. There it was, a solution to my problem already designed into the tool. The little touches like that make me very satisfied with my New Wave.
