Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination SheathCustomer Review: great, just a well rounded tool, well worth the 50 bucks. Summary: 5 Stars
i recieved the leatherman wave for my birthday from my grandfather who is a big leatherma fan. After i opened it up i spent a few minutes looking at all of its features, when done i passed around and began reading the manuel. it got back to my grandfather who was as amazed as i was, this is a very well put together tool with many usefull tools. my grandfather went out and bought another for himself on amazon the next day. At first i was sceptical b/c i had come on here and read the reviews, don't let them fool you there are some sceptics who just expect perfection. sure after you use the screwdriver with force 9 or 10 times the black paint fades a little and swithcing the different sides of the screwdriver from phillips to flathead puts a beating on the paint, this to me seems to be the only flaw.some also critisise the case, but for a tool such as this it needs to be a tougher leather to withstand the beating it will recieve if you use it reguarly.if you dont want a case hanging from your belt than i strongly suggest the 5 dollar splurge to get the pocket clip it is very usefull then i use the built in lanyard to keep my keys on(this thing goes everwhere w/me). from the top,two knives; one normal(very sharp actually, i would not even let my child touch it in fear of him hurting himself)second(serrated blade very sharp, i had read in another review that a man had cut through a seatbelt with it, i tried and eisily succedded in a quick 3 swipes almost effortless really), saw(cut through a 2 inch branch in like 5 seconds)file(cant neccisarily find a use for it but im sure it has one and the diomand coat looks cool anyway i i dont really mind)the two knives the saw and the file are all located on the outside, easily accesable and as some have said can slide out and cut you.potentially they can but very unlikely, i have had mine for 2 months now and it has only happened to me once the file slid out like a half a centimeter and it was only after i hade run over 7 blocks to catch my dog. all of these tools are over 3.5 inches long which believe me is long enough and they all lock very sturdily i cant say enough about this tool. on the inside it opens to a multi use pair of pliers with a surprisingly comfortable grip(is cuts wires strips them and has a very strong grip), the strongest little pair of scissors on a multitool or swiss army knife i have ever had(and ive had a lot)a small size screwdriver(phillips/flathead)graet for those small screws on all the watches and christmas presents(and a larger version of the same also very useful)and a great little bottle opener, not to mention the perfectly accurate 8 inch ruler which is also very useful(also in centimeters[2 in 1])all of the above also look which is very useful. the only two flaws are that the paint fades on the screwdrivers(which are actually quite functunal, not quite as good as a real screwdriver but will definately do in a pinch)and the pliers are not spring loaded, which come to think f i really dont miss to much(there is a lot less pinching, it has actually not pinched me once and the springs are not actually that great)some are annoyed with the size but you could not get all of this functanality with a small tool the size of it since the pictures are not to great is about as long as a mouse and half as wide. it is a bit on the heavier size but just like my wallet i no longer feel it in my day to day activities.i have waited two months to write my reveiew so i could test it first and so far no problems.some say theres have broken during first use, mine is fine and just in case you get a bad one there is a (25 YEAR limited WARRINTY)so just return it and get a new one.[...]) . this tool has been used probably more than 250 times in my day to day life in the last 2 months as i said before i sugest buying the [...] lanyard and pocket clip which has eisily been worth it. and this whole thing ius stainless steel and actually one of the most atractive tools ive had and it is eisily the most useful, leatherman has outdone itself and i belive i am going to buy another just in case anything ever happens to this one. for only [...] you cant afford not to take this thing of the fools hand who is selling it for such a low price.july 3 2009
Customer Review: An amazing tool and investment. Summary: 5 Stars
It is my pleasure to review this fine tool that has, in the last couple of months assisted me in a variety of ways. Leatherman's have, in a way, been a part of my family for some time. My father-in-law, a Research and Development Engineer and Carpenter, carries the original version of the Wave, and has so for some time. His enthusiasm for it inspired me to get one as well for work on our farm and other uses. According to my wife, his latest operation with it was this past weekend at a family camp outing where he used his Leatherman to cut the heel of her shoes out. He did this so that she could wear them without getting blisters while hiking Pikes Peak. Considering how hard shoes can be to cut through, this is amazing for a tool that has seen constant service for the past 10+ years. I've seen him use it to splice wiring, fencing projects, cutting PVC, and many more uses. It still works amazingly well.
I've used my Leatherman daily ever since I ordered it through Amazon a couple of months ago. My very first use for it was to repair some safety glasses with the small screwdriver that slips in and out of it's adapter. I did this not 5 minutes after I opened it. Other uses have been to hang up clothesline, clear out old barbed wire (the pliers worked very well on this I might add), trim Hedge trees (a considerable task given the density of Hedge) and to remove a valve stem from a mower tire to repair it (needle nose pliers).
I have only one complaint with this tool. The saw on it does not close smoothly. This is a miniscule problem though, and it is due to my constant use of the saw that this problem has occurred. Cutting at an awkward angle is not a good idea, but at times is hard to avoid. The saw still functions though and is EXTREMELY sharp. Types of wood I've experimented on are (Pine, Cedar, Hedge, Mulberry, Bushes, and many more).
As with all tools, care is an important thing to do with your Leatherman investment. Cleaning it is a breeze as it is stainless steel, and a little bit of elbow grease works magic on it. A wet rag is all you need as long as you thoroughly dry it. Dabbing a small bit of lubricating oil on the tools is a good idea to keep them water resistant and functioning smoothly.
Finally, you would do well to buy the pocket clip for it if you do not like having a holster on your hip. As soon as I bought mine, the clip keeps my Wave secure in my pocket and it's comfortable there. It's still easy to grab with Leather gloves on and is easy to relinquish from your pockets when the time comes for use.
My Leatherman accompanies me everywhere I go. It brings me great peace of mind to have it and I hope that yours will as well.
Customer Review: Useful in ditching dates that have gone bad. Summary: 5 Stars
I, in general, don't like tools and have as few as possible cluttering up the place. Hey, what are repairmen for? I do make an exception with this little thing though. This is one useful toy! I, as a matter of fact have five of them. I keep one at home, one in my apartment, one in each of my cars and carry one in my purse. I was not even aware of these useful little items until I read an article in a magazine about some poor guy who was out walking and a big old rock fell on his arm. Rather than die a horrible death of starvation, or having some wild animal eat him, he took his leatherman type tool and cut his arm off with it! This saved his life! I had recently had a similar experience. I was at a convention in Atlanta and hooked up with a lady lawyer there, one thing led to another, and well the next morning I found myself lying in bed with her laying across my right leg completely zonked out. Now this girl talked nonstop unless her mouth was occupied elsewhere (I have to admit she was pretty good at that), and I did not want to wake her up and listen for the next three days. My leg was completely asleep; I mean no feeling what-so-ever. Yup, I had to wake her up and it took me two days to ditch her. Had I had one of these multipurpose tools with me, I could have made a tourniquet from my pantyhose, and simply removed my leg like the guy removed his arm! I swear by my sister virginity (now that is a laugh), that I would have done it. She still writes me and I may have to change my phone number. Anyway, I read this article about the guy and said to myself that I have to have one of those thingies.
I can fix just about anything now and actually go around the house, office and cars looking for broke stuff to fix even if it does not need it. As an added bonus, the one I carry in my purse can act as a great defensive weapon and is perfectly legal to carry in most conservative states but as I seldom travel in New England, I need not worry too much about that.
There is one tool on it, a wire stripper. I have absolutely no idea what that is for and have never seen a wire that I had a great desire to strip, or why on earth someone would want to do that to the poor things. I Guess you can't have it all though, huh.
Anyway, I really truly recommend this tool. It is neat, cool and oh so useful. I think I will buy them for peoples Christmas presents this year.
Customer Review: Best of these kinds of multitools, great gift. Summary: 5 Stars
*** NOTE: I am reviewing the Leatherman Wave, not the company selling it. Please consider that when voting. ***
I had a great group of guys in my wedding party and I wanted to get them something they might use every day. Now, some of these guys already own multitools or have their own copies, but nobody owned a top-line model from Leatherman. In fact, I think they all had knockoffs.
The difference between a Leatherman and a cheap imitator is huge. Steel quality is measurably better, and tolerances are smaller, so your pliers really grip and your wire cutters really cut. I liked the screwdriver bit size, really slotted in tight on Phillips and slot screws.
Consider, though, that it's a massive tool, so it's reaches the limit (and good arguments are made for exceeding the limit) of usable size and weight, but if you wanted a tool for the work truck or to hang off your work belt "just in case", this and a flashlight are definitely the best "just in case" tools you can own. It does come with a belt case, and the keyring is large enough to take a decent carabiner for clipping onto a belt or a work area for use.
Worth the cost? I'm not sure it's worth it to many, but if you have to own the best multitool possible, you have to consider this as a strong choice. The premium makes this a tremendous gift because it is a fine quality tool. It's usually not something one buys for one's self ("I can live with a cheaper one")... once you get one, you can't ever go back to the knockoffs... you've been properly spoiled.

Customer Review: Good but hefty multitool Summary: 5 Stars
I've had the new Wave since 2006. I'm not a professional handyman, although I do have the reputation as the "fixer" in my extended family, from computers to household items to cars.
I own 3 different leatherman products: this wave, a juice S2, and a squirt P4. The wave is the beefiest (and the heaviest) of them all, and that's understandable considering all of its functionalities. I'm emphasizing the weight because (at more than half a pound) it effectively precludes having the wave in the pocket; if you're getting one without the sheath, save yourself the trouble and buy a sheath. An argument can be made if you're wearing jeans and have the clip, but since I don't wear jeans to work, it's not a consideration.
Even in a sheath, the Wave is not my EDC (every day carry) because of the weight; my current EDC is the Squirt. The wave rides on my belt only during long or outdoor trips, and it's complement of tools shines for those occasions.
I have owned Victorinox tools as well (Champ and Centurion). In comparison, Leatherman tools are generally beefier but Victorinox' have smoother action and better finish. As a matter of fact, everything about the Leatherman Wave is pretty much beefier and sturdier, and it comes at a price: weight. Victorinox' answer to the Wave is the Swisstool Spirit, and at 5.7 oz it's far lighter than Wave's 8.5 oz.
They all work well, so it comes down to personal preference. Leatherman Wave is my choice because the knife is a serious one with a thick spine.
